When I was a teenager, whether at home or when I was traveling, I loved to get the local alternative paper (think The Village Voice) and pour over the art show listings, movie times for indie films, bands coming through town, restaurant reviews, and any cool, different thing that was coming to town. The paper that I grew up with was Creative Loafing in Tampa. When I lived in Seattle, it was The Stranger, and Memphis was Memphis Flyer. It was where I learned how to hunt for all the cool, underground things not to miss when I was growing up.
I remember when I took my first trip to NYC alone. I was 19, and this was pre-internet. As soon as I arrived in the city, I picked up a Village Voice and headed to the hotel where I was staying. I spent the first hour of my trip circling everything I wanted to do over the four days I was in the city. And I then spent the next few days exploring all the cool things I’d found.
While I won’t get to attend these things, I hope that some of you will and will report back.

What are you excited about over the next month? Is a band coming through your town that you don’t want to miss? Is there a new foreign or indie film you can’t wait to see? Do you have plans to attend the art opening of a favorite artist? What about a new hotel or restaurant that’s opening that you are looking forward to? I’d love to hear what’s on your radar. - Erin
